If you're looking after your families health, which we all do naturally, you have to consider the greater community and advocate for large scale changes that will ultimately trickle down to individuals.

It's great for the budge and for the environment.  Tastes better too!

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

My biggest concern is air pollution and elected officials lack of action in general.  Hopefully people running for office will make these issues a major priority and people will vote with the planet in mind.

Great for the planet and the budget.  If you have little kids, they prefer snacks that they are used to from home anyways.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

We use a lot of plastics in our daily lives that we don't even think about.  The calculator was helpful for reflecting on those less obvious plastics and considering ways to reduce.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Just Say No
Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?

There may be a few.  I will need to clear out any remaining styrofoam and pvc pipes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

It was marketing geared toward our current "just throw it away" culture.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

People are afraid of food.  If it's not individually wrapped in plastic, then it's not safe.  We can change this culture by educating the public about the food chain--from farm to table processes.  Then we can make truly informed decisions and vote with our dollar.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Water Bottles
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
