Plastic Containers at Work

I will ask customers at work if they want lids, straws, and plastic spoons with their to-go cups at work rather than just giving it to them. I am doing this to decrease the amount of single use plastic ending up in our oceans!

Plastic free july is almost over! I have learned so much this month and really pushed myself to reduce my plastic consumption. I hope to keep these plastic free habits!

What are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?

I did not donate to a local organization. The one I donated to is “Clear Blue Sea” a recently formed Non-profit that collects plastic out of the oceans using their machine, FRED. FRED also untangles any marine life that is stuck in the plastic, and Clear Blue Sea repurposes the plastic they collect! You can support Clear Blue Sea by volunteering for them or donating!

Just watched a documentary with my pals! They all loved it and loved to be educated about Hope Spots! Dr. Sylvia A Earle is so inspiring!

How could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?

I usually only use a reusable cup to go. If they are pressuring me to not use one, I can just not order one or try to list reasons why it will not make a difference for them. For example, it’s cheaper for them because they won’t have to buy more to go containers!

Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

We watched Mission Blue. We were going to originally watch A Plastic Ocean, but it was taken off of Netflix :( . We learned how quickly humans can affect the ocean and how quickly we can decrease certain fish populations, but Hope Spots are a reason for hope.

Just bought my safety razor! Can’t wait until it comes in so I can start using it! I’ve heard it takes a little while to get used to using.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

The economic benefits of a metal razor are similar to those of a menstrual cup. Now, I do not have to keep buying plastic razors each month. The question of whether disposable razors were ever needed is an interesting question. I’ve never thought about it in depth, but it could have been a way to just continually make money.

    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Sarah Marie's avatar

The act of picking up trash can connect myself to the community because it makes me more responsible for the appearance and health of my community and its waterways. Living on a canal, I find myself more aware of trash in my neighborhood because I know it will most likely end up in the canal.
