Sarah's actions
Create Your Own Action
Plastic Containers at Work
I will ask customers at work if they want lids, straws, and plastic spoons with their to-go cups at work rather than just giving it to them. I am doing this to decrease the amount of single use plastic ending up in our oceans!
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 1 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Food
Start Composting
I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support a nonprofit dedicated to plastic pollution reduction.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 1 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Personal Care
Pretty oh so Pretty
I will purchase beauty products that are packaged in sustainable packaging.
Personal Care
Lather Up
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, and conditions with either a bar or refillable option.
Food
Takeout Pro
I will use my own containers when ordering takeout.
Personal Care
Dam the Flow
I will use a menstrual cup and/or cloth pads
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?

Sarah Marie 7/30/2019 11:33 AMPlastic free july is almost over! I have learned so much this month and really pushed myself to reduce my plastic consumption. I hope to keep these plastic free habits! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Raise Money For a NonprofitWhat are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?
Sarah Marie 7/30/2019 11:30 AMI did not donate to a local organization. The one I donated to is “Clear Blue Sea” a recently formed Non-profit that collects plastic out of the oceans using their machine, FRED. FRED also untangles any marine life that is stuck in the plastic, and Clear Blue Sea repurposes the plastic they collect! You can support Clear Blue Sea by volunteering for them or donating! -
Sarah Marie 7/26/2019 11:34 AMJust watched a documentary with my pals! They all loved it and loved to be educated about Hope Spots! Dr. Sylvia A Earle is so inspiring!-
Hillary Bohm 7/26/2019 3:54 PMGlad I got to watch it with you! :) Dr. Sylvia A. Earl is my queen

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Takeout ProHow could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?
Sarah Marie 7/26/2019 11:32 AMI usually only use a reusable cup to go. If they are pressuring me to not use one, I can just not order one or try to list reasons why it will not make a difference for them. For example, it’s cheaper for them because they won’t have to buy more to go containers! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Sarah Marie 7/26/2019 11:27 AMWe watched Mission Blue. We were going to originally watch A Plastic Ocean, but it was taken off of Netflix :( . We learned how quickly humans can affect the ocean and how quickly we can decrease certain fish populations, but Hope Spots are a reason for hope. -
Sarah Marie 7/19/2019 8:39 AMFinally got to use my metal razor! It takes a little practice to learn to use it. -
Sarah Marie 7/16/2019 6:55 AMAt the halfway point! Doing great so far! I hope everyone’s Plastic Free July is going well! -
Sarah Marie 7/13/2019 10:02 AMJust bought my safety razor! Can’t wait until it comes in so I can start using it! I’ve heard it takes a little while to get used to using. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Sarah Marie 7/13/2019 10:01 AMThe economic benefits of a metal razor are similar to those of a menstrual cup. Now, I do not have to keep buying plastic razors each month. The question of whether disposable razors were ever needed is an interesting question. I’ve never thought about it in depth, but it could have been a way to just continually make money. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Sarah Marie 7/12/2019 6:25 PMThe act of picking up trash can connect myself to the community because it makes me more responsible for the appearance and health of my community and its waterways. Living on a canal, I find myself more aware of trash in my neighborhood because I know it will most likely end up in the canal.
