I signed a WWF petition today asking governments around the world to sign a global legally binding treaty to streamline how we use and dispose of plastics. You can too. Here's the link: https://wwf.panda.org/get_involved/campaign_with_us/plastics_campaign_page/

Today, I picked up trash on my way home from work and took a different path. One person who saw me picking up litter picked some up near where he was and brought it over to contribute. That was nice, but then I was totally dismayed when I got a section of street I cleaned yesterday, and it was like I had never been there. Sigh.

Something helped itself to my newly planted lettuce between yesterday and today. Hopefully it was a rabbit. The alternative is not good.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

Here are a few things I've done to eliminate single-use plastics in my kitchen:
    1. Replaced zip locks with silicone "stashables"
    2. Replaced plastic wrap with silicone stretchy bowl covers and beeswax paper.
    3. Make my own salad dressing
    4. Replaced plastic storage containers with glass
    5. Use washable cellulose dishcloths instead of "sponges"
    6. Can my own tomatoes, pickles, and jams (when I have time)

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

While my friend and I were picking up litter in the neighborhood today, it made me think about my community and how blind so many seem to be to all the trash littering our sidewalks, streets, and public spaces. But, then a couple jogged by and thanked us for what we were doing, and that little bit of gratitude made all the difference.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

Plastic packaging of produce products may have started to keep products coming from around the globe fresher for longer. For this reason, it serves the consumer, the farmers, and the plastic producers.Buying and eating food grown locally can help eliminate the need for plastic packaging--and it has less of a carbon footprint too!

    Food Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

By growing a few plants in my back patio, it brightens up the concrete patio. And, there's a little more oxygen to go around.

Planted some oregano, basil, and lettuce in a planter this afternoon. Made sure to buy a ceramic planter, but the plants themselves came in plastic containers as did the potting soil. Will use the potting soil bag to pick up trash on my way to work tomorrow so at least it isn't a single-use plastic bag. I hope the plants survive. I don't have a great track record and the light at my place isn't terrific.

This morning, a friend and I walked the neighborhood with a large trash bag (plastic--sorry everyone) for 1.5 hours picking up every piece of litter we saw. Between the two of us, we only covered one square block and filled a bag with more trash than I generate in a month. I'm now rewarding myself with an episode of Stranger Things.
