Jen's actions
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Dam the Flow
I will use a menstrual cup and/or cloth pads
Food
Skip the Straw
I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden in my home, workplace, or community garden
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own airplane snacks and eat at local restaurants to avoid take-out containers.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA approved reusable quart sized bag.
Lifestyle
Travel Smart
If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible Cup
I will avoid sending 5 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.
Food
Use Reusable Water Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Jen Joseph 7/30/2019 7:50 AMMade homemade pasta, spaghetti sauce and meatballs. No plastic used and it tastes so much better, but holy crap was it a lot of work! -
Jen Joseph 7/27/2019 5:05 AMHappy end of Zoo Keeper week! -
Jen Joseph 7/26/2019 8:09 AMHow do you remember to bring reusable containers to restaurants? -
Jen Joseph 7/25/2019 1:57 PMI watched a family toss their reusable cups on the ground and walk away from them today. I went and picked them up and asked them if they were done with them or not. They looked at me in disbelief that I would dare ask them why they threw something on the ground, especially when there was a trash can less than 10 feet away across the walkway. -
Jen Joseph 7/24/2019 5:15 AMMade homemade pasta last night, no plastic involved! -
Jen Joseph 7/20/2019 1:12 PMLong hot morning, cool down with soft serve ice cream in a waffle cone because it means no single use plastic! -
Jen Joseph 7/19/2019 10:02 AMWe're having a cornhole tournament for Zoo Keeper Week next week. Got the boards all setup today. We're super proud to say that everything was made from recycled goods, from the boards, bags and even the tournament bracket! -
Jen Joseph 7/18/2019 6:11 AMHad a 5 minute conversation with a guest yesterday on why we no longer sell bottle water but instead sell canned water. They said that they understood the reasoning but just couldn't wrap their heads around canned water. -
Jen Joseph 7/17/2019 2:05 PMPicked up my 10 pieces of trash today, found 3 plastic bottles and a bouncy ball. -
Jen Joseph 7/16/2019 9:47 AMIt's my first day back to work from having surgery. I couldn't believe the amount of waste at the hospital. I know that they need to be clean, but is it really any cheaper to have everything be so flimsy and disposable than make it out of metal and clean it?
