Katie's actions
Create Your Own Action
Single use plastic free camping
I will go camping and 1) only bring food/water in reusable/compostable packaging, 2) purchase packaging free food or make my own granola bars marshmallows etc for the trip. This will be a fact finding mission for future backpacking trips.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Host a House Party
I will host a house party with friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on plastics.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Lifestyle
Travel Smart
If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own airplane snacks and eat at local restaurants to avoid take-out containers.
Food
Make Your Own
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host a House PartyWhat are the benefits of hosting a house party related to getting to know your guests, connecting them to the cause you are focusing on, and building your community?
Katie Imhoff 7/18/2019 9:02 AMI am very excited to get a chance to chat with folks about DIY sunscreen today during our workshop! It will be great to help people find one more way they can help reduce their plastic consumption and talk about their successes and struggles! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Buy Only What I NeedAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Katie Imhoff 7/14/2019 4:52 PMI typically don't go on huge shopping sprees, but when I am tempted to buy something that I won't use every day, or that I don't really need, it is nice to have a reminder that refraining from purchasing that item is good for the environment! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Minimize PackagingWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Katie Imhoff 7/08/2019 9:59 AMI don't often shop at PCC but when I was in, I noticed that they offer paper bags for their produce rather than the plastic bags most mainstream grocery stores offer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Make Your OwnHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Katie Imhoff 7/08/2019 9:57 AMNow that summer produce is in full swing, I have developed a new found love for making my own salsa. It is super easy easy, and tastes better and fresher than the store bought salsa. I always assumed that it would be difficult to make great tasting salsa until I started this summer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Katie Imhoff 7/01/2019 10:31 AMCurrently I use glass containers, but they have plastic lids... does anyone have suggestions on leak proof containers that do not have plastic lids?-
Alex Tanz 7/01/2019 5:04 PMWe have tried silicone covers on pyrex. They are leakproof, but can also tear if stretched too far. Silicone is more degradeable than plastic, and leaches chemicals at a lower rate than plastic, but not perfect.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Share My ActionsIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Katie Imhoff 7/01/2019 10:29 AMThis is a great new challenge for this year, so many of my peers rely on social media so this is a great way to reach folks who I don't get to see every day! My plan is to post something weekly (ideally with a photo).
