Erinn Hasselgren 7/29/2019 8:44 AMI saw someone biking along The Charles yesterday picking up trash with a grabber from his bike and collecting it in his front basket--such a good idea! -
Erinn Hasselgren 7/26/2019 7:54 AMI just wanted to share two recent Planet Money episodes. The first is about how and why we started recycling--it turns out it was kind of an accident!
https://www.npr.org/2019/07/09/739893511/episode-925-a-mob-boss-a-garbage-boat-and-why-we-recycle
The second episode gets into whether we are recycling too much (spoiler: no one is going to like the answer!). This really made me think about how we need find ways to move away from single-use and change our mindset and habits to make reusing what we already have more normal and widely accepted.
https://www.npr.org/2019/07/12/741283641/episode-926-so-should-we-recycle-
Colleen MacDonald 7/28/2019 7:01 AMI absolutely agree about changing our mindset to get away from single-use plastic. We need to reduce by a lot and be diligent about recycling what we do use--which should be as little as possible!. -

Erinn Hasselgren 7/23/2019 6:56 AMThis is an interesting read. I think the biggest takeaway is that it's been shown that in places where plastic grocery bags are banned, the sale of garbage bags dramatically increases. Since garbage bags are made of a thicker plastic, we end up not eliminating as much plastic as we may think. I'm not sure I totally buy their argument against cotton tote bags... The study it's based on does not take into account the impact on plastic in the environment
