Isabel Garcia-Trevino 8/01/2019 3:59 PMI keep a grocery bag of single use plastic to tie up into a ball to put in recycling (per city guidelines). I noticed that at the beginning of July, weekly I was putting at least 2 soccer-ball sized bags of single-use plastic into the recycling bin. Now, I've been putting in 1 soccer-ball sized bag. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets Thrifty PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Isabel Garcia-Trevino 8/01/2019 3:57 PMBuying used keeps "old" items from ending up in the trash. I feel good about buying used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Isabel Garcia-Trevino 8/01/2019 3:55 PMUsing smaller reusable bags when buying loose produce like apples, lemons, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Isabel Garcia-Trevino 8/01/2019 3:54 PMNot directly in my community; however, down in South Padre I did notice that the Hilton hotel I stayed at did not give out single use straws with their beverages, including mixed drinks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Start CompostingDo an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable Water BottlesUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Provide the AlternativesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) does your family regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Isabel Garcia-Trevino 7/27/2019 6:50 AMWhen people ask me why I pick up trash in random parking lots or parks, I tell them about our zoo's mission and expectations as ambassadors for our animals. They generally have a positive reaction to it. -
Isabel Garcia-Trevino 7/15/2019 8:09 AMI remembered to take reusable bags to non-grocery stores. I did over hear someone say, "oh, that's a good idea" while I was in line waiting for the cashier. -
