REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Katie Fortescue 7/17/2019 5:07 PMThere has been a pretty big shift in the thinking on plastic straws. So much so that #skipthestraw almost seems dated. That’s not to say that everyone is on board, but a lot of coastal communities are. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Katie Fortescue 7/17/2019 5:05 PMThis whole process stemmed from a survey we received from the county about curb side pick up reduction. We decided to track how frequently we put our bins out and at what capacity. We found that we use the recycle bin more frequently than the garbage bin. Which could says a lot about the amount of plastic/glass/paper in our house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Share My ActionsIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Katie Fortescue 7/15/2019 8:16 PMSocial media provides a large platform to get your message out! While it may not be earth shattering to those that read it, a post may nudge a friend to check out your suggestion. -
Katie Fortescue 7/15/2019 3:27 PMTook advantage of prime day to procure a few eco friendly finds is been holding off on due to cost. Hoping they pay off in the long run. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Brusha Brusha BrushaWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Katie Fortescue 7/15/2019 3:05 PMSo much less plastic! Slightly bummed out by the bristle material, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Making them more readily available will help drive change. I also think the ADA getting behind it would be a big help. -
Katie Fortescue 7/14/2019 8:39 PMMy travel reusable utensils accidentally met the garbage disposal today :( Looking for a replacement set if anyone has any recommendations, let me know! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel EatingWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Katie Fortescue 7/14/2019 8:31 PMIt wasn’t massively difficult. It really recruited some preplanning to dodge the extra plastic, but it should get easier with repetition. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Provide the AlternativesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) does your family regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Katie Fortescue 7/14/2019 8:29 PMWe have the hardest time when making unexpected stops while out running errands or traveling. Fast food is the worst- states, utensils, lids. Most of which can be avoided if we have our reusable packed and ready for use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Katie Fortescue 7/14/2019 8:27 PMThis was right after the 4th of July, so naturally there was a lot of firework debris. It was empowering to see others joining in on the effort to clean up the beach, even is some bystanders thought we were crazy.
