REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Deborah Ellsworth 7/31/2019 8:05 AMI am concerned with the droughts/famines, increasingly severe storms (I live on the Gulf of Mexico), and, on a purely personal level, the destruction of some of the beautiful natural areas in the world. -
Deborah Ellsworth 7/31/2019 8:00 AMWhew, 31 days. This ecochallenge has certainly made me more aware of many of the ways I can reduce my plastic usage. Avoiding straws, plastic bottles, and plastic bags are some easy things I can continue to incorporate into my daily life. Some of the challenges were more difficult (composting cat litter, buying only natural fibers) but gave me ideas for how I can reduce my waste/plastic usage even if eliminating it altogether may be a long-term, rather than a short-term, goal. Go Zoo Tampa!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel EatingWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/26/2019 10:25 AMIt made my travel experience cheaper, but it required a little more pre-planning to make the snacks ahead of time and then it can be a little cumbersome to carry the snacks particularly if they need to be kept at a certain temperature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/19/2019 3:07 PMRefillable travel sized toiletries are better for the environment and so much cheaper over time. I will definitely continue to use these when I travel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets All Natural Pet ToysIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/17/2019 2:49 PMI think for my cat (who will play with literally anything as long as it moves and I am using it) it would be best to reuse items I already have rather than purchase new natural pet toys. This is best for me because I don't need to buy anything new. Best for my cat because I already know he likes it--and lets face it, he is already playing with it. Best for the environment because it allows me to reuse items without taking anything new from the environment at all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Buy Only What I NeedAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/16/2019 1:24 PMI have noticed that this is something that I have difficulty doing all of the time. I think that as a short term goal I will try to reduce the amount of unnecessary things I buy, but I think eliminating these altogether may have to be more of a long term goal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/16/2019 1:07 PMIt is easy to cut back on most of the plastic bags. Usually when I am shopping, I am only buying a few items, and it is easy to carry them by hand or cart to my car. I also have reusable grocery bags for larger shopping trips. Occasionally I use curbside pick up which comes with the plastic bags, and it has been hard to let go of that convenience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets Pet WasteBy composting your pet waste, you are turning waste into nutrients to feed the soil. In what other ways can you turn waste into a resource in your life?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/15/2019 9:50 AMI can turn other waste into a resource by doing kitchen composting. I haven't yet done any composting of any sort so this research provided a lot of new information. However, the risks of certain toxins in cat poop and the risks if you don't compost it correctly have made me think that I should start with regular kitchen/food composting which seems to be safer and easier for a beginner like me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Deborah Ellsworth 7/14/2019 11:29 AMMy community does not (to my knowledge) have any messaging about reusable straws. However, I have noticed a casual dining restaurant in our area using paper disposable straws instead of plastic ones. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Deborah Ellsworth 7/12/2019 4:24 PMThe places where I most often use disposable utensils are if I am eating out at a fast food place. I think comparing the costs of disposable v reusable utensils as well as emphasizing the ability to advertise as an environmentally friendly company might be persuasive to fast food chains.
