No More Bread Bags

My last great challenge to be plastic free is to stop buying bagged bread. I want to be more diligent about making my own bread.

Other species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?

My reflection on this is that it is still not a great choice because of the bag it comes in, but it is better than the plastic tubs that carry other types. It will last longer because it takes less. I can also compost the waste, so that is less that goes to the landfill. Now I am on a mission to find it in bulk or a paper bag.

We went to Tractor Supply Store and bought the horse pellets for cat litter. It doesn't solve the plastic bag issue it came in, but it will require less litter, last longer, and I can compost the waste.

What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

I had to a presentation during our company call. I told 125 people that 40 billion forks are thrown away every year because of using disposable forks.

Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

I am still not where I want to be with this challenge. As a family of 5, baking enough bread to sustain our need for sandwiches is not something I have time to do. I can either get my family to eat less bread or learn how to bake it when I am on the road.

Last week instead of buying bread in a bag, I baked 2 loaves.

Traveling for work doesn't mean I have to compromise my eco beliefs. It takes just as much energy to throw some dishes in a bag as it does to seek out a plastic fork.

I haven't used a straw or plastic water bottle or fork in 9 years.
