Lucy Ehrenclou 7/15/2019 1:50 PMI have been trying to cook more to reduce how much single use plastic I use in the form of frozen meals (for lunch at work). I also purchased some reusable produce/bulk bags and bamboo utensils today! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Lucy Ehrenclou 7/15/2019 1:47 PMI encourage those around me, such as my peers and family members to use reusable cutlery whenever possible. I bought some bamboo utensils and metal straws for my dad to keep with him. I try to make this change sound as simple as possible, so it seems easier for people to do in their everyday lives, especially at work at AOP and in conversation with my peers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Lucy Ehrenclou 7/15/2019 1:44 PMI have made more of an effort to remember to bring reusable bags to my car or to keep them in my backpack, which has made my spur-of-the-moment grocery store runs easier. I also just purchased reusable produce/bulk bags!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Lucy Ehrenclou 7/02/2019 4:11 PMYes, even when I ask for no straw at restaurants, the servers respond "oh for the turtles," or something similar. I also notice many restaurants distributing decomposable straws like those made of paper or hay. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Lucy Ehrenclou 7/02/2019 4:09 PMConsumers want to buy convenient and sanitary products. Produce in sealed plastic bags boxes feel cleaner and are more convenient. It serves the consumer short term, as it is convenient and feels more sanitary. It moreover serves the producer/distributer, as it increases sales from making the consumer feel better about their products, and swaying more consumers to buy that specific brand of product for its "cleanliness" and convenience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Lucy Ehrenclou 7/02/2019 4:06 PMPlastic makes life simpler in the moment, but I have been working on prepping lunches in advanced to save the plastic used in frozen single meals, which is what I usually eat at work because it's easy. I didn't have the time to meal prep yesterday, but am going to today
