If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.

Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.

Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Melissa Donnelly 7/13/2019 4:52 PMOh FYI, I've just learned that Crayola has a program where they collect any brand of plastic markers and keep them out of our oceans!-
Nicole Herbert 7/14/2019 7:04 AMThanks, I'd been meaning to look for somewhere that takes dried markers!

Melissa Donnelly 7/10/2019 12:44 PMSlowly but surely getting us to make changes. Still a long way to go.-
Debbi S 7/10/2019 2:23 PMKeep at it. Some habits to change are easier than others. One step at a time, one day at a time....

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Melissa Donnelly 7/06/2019 5:45 AMI don't really know where to buy steel razors, but I honestly keep reusing my razors to the point where tetanus is probably a real risk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Lather UpWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Melissa Donnelly 7/06/2019 5:43 AMI tend to buy very large shampoo bottles, so they last longer. I prefer the screw top bottles as I can repurposed them. I don't really know where to refill these bottles with shampoo yet... I find Toronto is behind on the mark, or maybe it's me. I currently use bar soap, but the stupid pack comes wrapped in plastic. This challenge is frustrating as it seems like large businesses don't care, and are just there to sabotage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Tim Taylor Your Beauty ProductsHomemade makeup is a practice which has been done in community for thousands of centuries as many indigenous women relied on plants for their bright make up. How can you incorporate that sense of community as you embark on a similar pursuit?
Melissa Donnelly 7/06/2019 5:37 AMI just don't bother wearing makeup anymore. I find it is stupidly expensive anyway. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Just Say NoDo some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?
Melissa Donnelly 7/06/2019 5:35 AMI definitely do not have any polystyrene, but I think our pipe drains for the tub is made from polyvinyl. The old pipes were replaced recently as the other pipes wore down and leaked into the suit below us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Melissa Donnelly 7/06/2019 5:28 AMFor the most part when I travel, I normally go places where others are in charge of the food, and have their own reusable utensils. Very rarely do I have to grocery shop or eat out, but if I ever go for a longterm holiday, or somewhere with regular access to a city, I will make sure to bring supplies that will help reduce my need a plastic -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Melissa Donnelly 7/06/2019 5:24 AMBetter for people with sensitive skin as there's no dyes or chemicals. It biodegrades vs synthetic close just pollute. Not sure how specifically animals would benefit other than there is less junk polluting their habitat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Melissa Donnelly 7/04/2019 4:17 PMIn general, when people see the paper straw they applaud the attempt to help save our animals and planet, but this is short lived as I've seen people complain about how the straw just dissolves, and doesn't fare well against milkshakes and smoothies. I am on the fence about metal straws as you would need to clean it immediately, and sometimes public washrooms really aren't that sanitary. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Melissa Donnelly 7/04/2019 4:13 PMI have a million animal holding bags that I made out of old t-shirts. I just repurposed them for produce, and since it is cotton, I can just through it into the wash. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether the weight of the bag affected the overall price.
