WinCo for the WIN! WinCo is full of single-use plastic (and Styrofoam) items - but it also has a tremendous selection of affordable bulk foods. Most of what we bought will go to refill things we already own - from spices to Parmesan cheese - although the amount of bulk items we are bringing home means we are also getting creative with glass jars around the house. All in all, it was a great experience.

Did you know that today is International Plastic Bag Free Day? I didn’t! But what a great day to know about: https://www.plasticbagfreeday.org/

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

I feel a little weird checking this off every day - I am not able to shop every day! But I am using bulk foods! My local store actually has a number of bulk bins for rice, dry beans, etc. Their bulk areas are very affordable, but I'm not sure about the quality, and I'm not able to buy organic options. For greater variety, I will have to visit a store that is much further away and less convenient.

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?

Today I reached out to two businesses, because that was an easy ask. I'm not sure what I would ask of my representatives. Anyone have anything they are campaigning their representatives about?

Today’s ten pieces of trash were surprisingly difficult! Oh well, the dog got an extra long walk....

Last year, I signed up for the challenge to reach out to a business to ask them to reduce single use plastics. I signed a petition, and wrote to Trader Joe's about twice a week last July, and about once a month since then.

So, like, I'm going to claim all of the credit for this:

I know we’ve got at least a few volunteers signing up now. I have a conundrum. I’m prepping snacks for plastic free July, and I’d love your input. So far we have been pretty successful at providing snacks in bulk that minimize plastic wrapping. I’m going to add in snacks from the bulk aisle this month.  What are your favorite group-friendly snacks by the pound?
