Nancy Chernett 7/31/2019 3:26 PMWas away half of month. Use Plastic was very present for me while away. There were times when I had little alternative at social gatherings. Lots of opportunity. A ways to go. -
Nancy Chernett 7/17/2019 4:54 PMI have been spending time researching options for personal care products that can replace what I’m currently using. Looking at make up, hair products, body lotions. So glad we purchased more snap ware for leftovers. Have really reduced plastic bag and plastic wrap use. -
Nancy Chernett 7/09/2019 6:00 PMToday I researched terracycle, a company that recycles materials that may not be recycleable in my community. It started with learning about their partnership with Baush and Lamb and now I have a better idea of how they operate. I may change some of the products I use and there are other products that I can use that don't require recycling which I have also been researchng -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Visit A Waste Management FacilityLandfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your visit?
Nancy Chernett 7/05/2019 5:46 PMI attended a presentation on recycling in another township to learn more about the local issues and the kind of response the participants would have to the increased prices and the changes in what is viably recycled now that China has stopped taking our plastic. According to the waste management company that was part of the panel, 1 & 2 plastics are the only ones that have a market value. In addition, paper and glass are no longer bringing in money to recycling companies. It is great to learn about these changes and really supports the need to reduce plastic use in all parts of life. -
Nancy Chernett 7/04/2019 5:27 AMI have not been posting until today, though I am present and following many of my challenges. Very busy with other aspects of my life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste MealDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Nancy Chernett 7/04/2019 5:25 AMI am finding this challenge I set up for myself very challenging! We have all but elminated plastic bags from our home and store left overs, produce etc in long lasting containers. What is so difficult is finding food that is not already in a plastic container. Even at the farmer's market many items are packaged in some way, though I work at getting around this. It increasingly feels like we will have to make a lot of what we purchase ourselves such a tabouli and humus, yogurt, peanut & almond butter just to name a few. Meat from the butcher that goes in our own containers. We live in a convenience economy--some of which makes my busy life easier, some of those conveniences I can likely do without. Making these changes is not just about using/not using plastics --it about changing a way of life-in some ways going back, which seems unlikely. Finding that middle ground is my new reality.
