REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Dylan Canady 7/17/2019 6:22 PMI (re)watched The Story of Stuff, by Annie Leonard. It's a concise and powerful examination of production and waste in oir largely materialistic society. While a little dated now, it remains relevant in its message. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible CupGreat job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? What's next on your list to reduce your waste?
Dylan Canady 7/14/2019 6:00 PMI have a ball python, and she feeds on rats. For a number of reasons, I feed frozen. This comes with a number of complications, most obvious of which is packaging. I have recently tried a bulk delivery service to avoid the excess packaging of buying individual rats at the pet store, but my snake has refused to eat the rats from this new provider. This is more complicated than just reducing plastic waste, but I am looking into other options, because obviously the current situation is not working. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Dylan Canady 7/14/2019 5:56 PMIt's fulfilling in a way regular work does not provide; working with other members of a community gives me a strong sense of belonging and comradery, even with otherwise complete strangers. -
Dylan Canady 7/09/2019 3:37 PMI'm finding myself a bit torn on the challenges I've accepted involving the replacement of products using plastic. On one hand, minimizing plastic is important, but on the other, replacing something before it is useless is wasteful. Luckily my toothpaste is almost empty so that one os easy. But dog toys and other things can last for years, plastic or not. I think I will take some liberties here and commit to avoiding plastic in the future, while not discarding what I have just because they're plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Homemade CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Dylan Canady 7/06/2019 3:39 PMThe personal advantage here is price. My total expense by volume was far lower than it would have been buying ready-made products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste MealDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Dylan Canady 7/06/2019 3:37 PMThe biggest culprit for me is produce packaging. Greens, berries, mushrooms, etc. all come in various forms of plastic, foam, or both. The key for me would be to invest in reusable, washable produce bags; if anyone has any recommendations let me know! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Dylan Canady 6/27/2019 2:49 PMI have noticed both positive and negative reactions to a recent change in St Petersburg making straws something you have to request specifically. Some have cited how straws are a very small portion of the plastic waste present in our oceans, and so claim they should be a low-priority issue. What seems to go unrecognized, however, is that our plastic waste is an amalgamation of countless forms of plastic; of course straws are a small portion, so let's figure out what to reduce next! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Raise Money For a NonprofitWhat are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?
Dylan Canady 6/27/2019 2:44 PMKeep Pinellas Beautiful is dedicated to cleaning and maintaining natural spaces in Pinellas County. They were present at our last Impact Day at store 32 in St Pete, and I've been working with them to organize a cleanup for Lucky's team members - who will be able to use MINCA hours! -
Dylan Canady 6/23/2019 6:36 PMHey, Lucky's folks, last challenge we had less than 50 team members sign up, let's double down and invite more of our coworkers to participate this time around!-
Kiersty Jude 6/27/2019 2:29 PMWe should create a team for this challenge!!!
