Audubon staff, volunteers, and Plastic Free July participants volunteering at Arc of Greater New Orleans today! We sorted Mardi Gras beads that Arc will recycle by selling back to krewes during Carnival. Each year, Arc employs over 80 adults with intellectual disabilities, and the bead recycling program is one job opportunity they provide. Sales of beads support this important program, which not only provides jobs but also keeps beads out of the landfill (and our storm drains!).

Thanks to everyone who came out to show your support today!

This is a peek inside my bathroom cabinet! Before July started, I placed my first order with Who Gives a Crap, a company that sells toilet paper that is both made of renewable and sustainable bamboo and also is not wrapped in plastic! (Did you know that some toilet paper is made from virgin growth forests?!)

Did you also know that 40% of the global population doesn't have access to toilets? This company also donates to programs that help increase access to toilets in areas without widespread infrastructure for indoor plumbing.

Great news, team! Yesterday, we reached our goal of 500 signups for the Plastic Free New Orleans team!

It has been a real joy seeing everyone engaged and delving into their personal goals to reduce plastic. Keep up the great work!

As we prepare for this tropical disturbance, I've been contemplating what useful role plastic plays in our lives. Situations like emergency preparedness and medical emergencies definitely benefit from plastic. Imagine a world where we preference the use of this amazing material for those extenuating circumstances and find alternatives for day-to-day needs like food and entertainment.

Be safe out there and make sure you're storm ready. And yes, that likely means buying water and provisions in plastic. And that's okay!

Save the date! On July 24th as part of Plastic Free July, Audubon will host a screening of the documentary Straws (like Jaws... but we all know plastic is scarier than sharks!)

The film explores the problems caused by plastic pollution and empowers individuals to be part of the solution.

Come for refreshments from 5:30 – 7:00 PM and learn ways to take action against plastic pollution in your daily life and in your community. Experience an up-close encounter with an animal ambassador and chat with Junior Aquarists about how marine debris impacts the oceans and waterways we love.
