  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Our zoo used recycled cutlery and today for the fourth we used our own silverware instead of plastics.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Smart
How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

    devney bowen's avatar
    devney bowen 7/04/2019 7:24 PM
I didn’t engage but I tried to think ahead so that I could avoid single use plastics and recycclspd everything I brought with me when I got back.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    devney bowen 7/04/2019 7:23 PM
I use my own bottles and refill the smaller travel ones. I also use products that are environmentally friendly and made without palm oil, are vegan, and made with sustainable products from USA.

The challenge is going great so far! I have brought it some people that have helped make an impact!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

    devney bowen's avatar
    devney bowen 7/04/2019 7:20 PM
It was difficult as we were eating as traveling. I used my own cup and straw which helped and the zoo had recyclable alternatives which was nice.  It is hard when you are eating out though because they use paper and boxes and bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

I watched the documentary called The Zoo. It follows the Bronx zoo.

It was difficult T first to remember to bring my with me to the store but it has become habitual. Now I’m much better about it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Skip the Straw
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

    devney bowen's avatar
    devney bowen 7/04/2019 7:16 PM
Sites like mermaid straw and final straw have led the way for mainstream stores to start selling reusable options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

    devney bowen's avatar
    devney bowen 7/04/2019 7:09 PM
I think it can be convenient but isn’t necessary. There are produce bags you can buy. Cut up your own zucchini and squash like we did and skip the packaging!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

Each piece winds up in or oceans and landfills. They are not necessary when there are reusable alternatives. They take a long time to break down if at all.
