Mary Ann Kingsley 7/30/2019 7:30 AMOnly one more day of Plastic Free July! But it has really opened my eyes in new ways about how heavily reliant the whole world is on plastics. Individual efforts are very important, but I am beginning to think that structural change has to do the heavy lifting. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Swap the SnacksHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/23/2019 8:27 AMI know my family is learning new habits that will make it easier for them to reduce their use of plastics as they start living on their own. I learn from them as well! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/19/2019 12:54 PMWhat if I asked my local Thai take out place to only provide plastic cutlery on demand? -
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/16/2019 8:48 AMQuestion: what are the best kinds of containers to use to carry my lunch from home? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/16/2019 8:46 AMI think the greatest benefit of growing your own garden is that you have to think about the system as a whole. Before you plant, you have to think about what soil nutrients you have (this is the first time I've used my own composted soil in the garden), once planted, you have to think about water management and insect control and plant maintenance. Then when the season is over, you need to think about next year.
We need to have a system-oriented, long range perspective to all our resource use in order to understand the consequences of our decisions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/10/2019 1:37 PMYes! I am seeing more and more biodegradable straws in restaurants and in grocery stores! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/09/2019 7:07 AMI use a mason jar every morning for my breakfast of oatmeal. I just buy the big containers of plain old fashioned oats, pour a little in the medium sized mason jar, add water, put in microwave for 2 minutes (you have to watch at the end and stop and start the microwave to avoid spilling over). Then add flavoring - usually peanut butter, sometimes jam, or nuts and honey. Put the lid on and take with me on my long drive to work (I bring along a spoon!). When done, put the lid back on and its easy to clean at night because the oatmeal doesn't dry up and turn into concrete. This saves money by not buying individual servings, saves packaging, and is very easy and tastes great! -
Mary Ann Kingsley 7/08/2019 12:33 PMGlad to get back to work this week from vacation! Yesterday I went grocery shopping and avoided using thin plastic bags for my vegetables and used my mesh bags instead. But I noticed there's still a lot of fruits and vegetables that are packaged in plastic. I'm going to go to my local farm stand next time but they use plastic bags too! I will bring my own packaging.
