Create Your Own Action
Read - How to Live Plastic Free
I have had this book written by the Marine Conservation Society on my stack of unread books for several months. Making this a commitment for July puts it at the top of my reading list.
Food
Visit the Butcher
I will purchase meats and cheeses from the deli counter or a butcher shop, and use my own containers to do so.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA approved reusable quart sized bag.
Lifestyle
Travel Smart
If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Lifestyle
Naked Bins
I will either line my trash cans with repurposed newspaper or paper bags, or I will not line my trash cans at all.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Support a Sharing EconomyWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Kathy Alsegaf 7/29/2019 4:38 PMDuring the EcoChallenge I realized my goal of installing a Little free library in front of my house where people can pick up and drop off books for free. Not plastics related but still supporting the sharing economy. I realized I was actually more excited about starting this up and watching how the community reacts than I am about buying new books!-
Liz Zavodsky (Ecochallenge Staff) 8/03/2019 7:55 AMI love this so much! It looks great! Nice job and what a great addition to your community.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Kathy Alsegaf 7/29/2019 4:24 PMI invited local firm participants to my house Saturday for dinner and we discussed the movies we have watched. A number of us had watched the Minimalists and it did make us think more about what we consume. The final lines in the movie included, "Love people. Use things. The opposite never works.” So true. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Visit the ButcherHow has using your own containers impacted the quality of the food you receive? Does this give you more awareness of where your food comes from as opposed to just grabbing a package of mystery origin cheese/meat?
Kathy Alsegaf 7/15/2019 2:00 PMI felt a little awkward carrying my own STASH bag to the deli counter at my local grocery store this weekend, But the attendant didn't bat an eye. Not sure it made me more aware of where the food comes from. It did make me more aware thinking about all the one-time plastic in my life. -
Kathy Alsegaf 7/01/2019 8:26 AMGetting ready to hit the road tomorrow - so packing up my reusable straw, water bottle, spork. My husband is a bit hesitant about the spork. It is good to challenge ourselves!
