My family has been very supportive of living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, but they are in the same boat as me with not knowing what exactly to do. I'm going to try to get my mom and girlfriend to sign up for this, but they are already taking steps with me. My girlfriend is more conscientious of plastic straw use and I've gotten reusable straws for us to use. Her son tends to use them a lot so I can save several straws from the landfill a day by giving him them alone. My mom and dad invested in metal straws and is switching from one use plastic and Styrofoam cups and plates to paper products and reusable plastics. One step at a time!

Fantastic, Tyler! We would love to have relatives & friends practice being Greener too but we haven't gotten others to change. I have noticed that A&W and McDonald's here have switched to paper straws & many stores & restaurants have quickly added veggie meat to their menus. We have had some thick plastic straws for many years. My daughter is mobile, so we don't need to take the straws in the car.
I have found that at some restaurants the younger wait staff are especially appreciative of our efforts to be Green. E.g. They let me bring our own cups and food containers if we order out to take home.
How was July 4th for you guys? We lived in Broken Arrow, OK for a few years. It was quite the learning experience for us!

I reached out to a few of my state's leaders to start out the program because there is currently a bill in the state legislature that I support. I am a big supporter of the use of native plants in landscape to help restore habitat available to local insects and other wildlife in urban and suburban areas. Right now in PA, there is a bill that would require the Department of Transportation to plant native plants at construction sites along our highways. That would be huge for reducing opportunities for invasive species to take over bare areas and increase plant populations for local insects and birds! I've written to the bill's prime sponsor for an update on the bill, as well as my senator and representative to encourage their support of the bill. It is in the senate transportation committee right now and I intend to email all of its members before this challenge is over.

Great for you! That's solid thinking, Ryan. I wonder if it could also reduce costs that the plants are native and possibly more available?
I've noticed that very many people freeze up at the idea of contacting politicians & government officials. It can be hard to contact them but generally they do respond to feedback (though sometimes it's token). I hear that your contacting the politicians multiple times counts hugely as they give it a multiplier effect. Tell us how it goes, k?

Hi guys! Jim, I apparently can't respond to the messages I have been getting from you through my email directly, so I will just post replies here! I'm glad to be a part of this (though I hope I didn't crash something that was supposed to be private for your family and friends)! Honestly, I chose this team because of the name lol. I loved Captain Planet when I was little and I have no connections to any other individuals or groups doing this challenge. For a long time I have wanted to take steps to reduce my carbon footprint and do whatever I can to help the environment and better my community. I have just been unsure how exactly to do those things. I saw an ad online for this and it seemed like the perfect way to educate myself on the matter and a fun way to keep track of how I am doing along the way. I'm really looking forward to this!
