What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

I haven't been able to complete this challenge yet because I haven't switched to refillable shampoo and conditioner, but I did switch to bar soap. Also, I got this soap lift that is made out of eco friendly bio plastic!

How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

I plan on becoming an advocate at the college I am about to start at in the fall. I am going to apply to be an Eco-Rep where I will try to find ways to make the campus more sustainable and eco-friendly.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

It is a good way to spread awareness to a lot of people at once. Instead of trying to tell everyone I know in person about something environmental that I want to spread the word about, I can just post and everyone will see it.

How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

I knew that I did not want to stop completing my actions just because I was going on vacation, so I made sure to pack reusable water bottles and metal straws. I believe that my actions may have inspired the people I was on the trip with because I started noticing that they no longer always used straws at restaurants.

Another company I recommend looking into is 4ocean. They sell bracelets made out of recycled materials, and when you buy them, a lot of the money goes to environmental causes. Also, they have teams of people who actually go out and clean up beaches and remove trash from the ocean.

Something that I did before this challenge started was order myself a Pela phone case. They’re sustainable because they are made out of plants, and the company donates some of their money to environmental charities! Plus, they’re super cute! I’d recommend getting one!

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

Switching to bamboo toothbrushes saves the unnecessary waste that is plastic toothbrushes. More people should start making this switch because there is essentially no difference between the types of toothbrushes, so you may as well not harm the environment. Plus, bamboo toothbrushes are really cheap. I ordered mine online for about $6.

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

Yes! For example, some waiters or waitresses seem confused when you ask them to not bring straws, but more and more lately seem to understand why and seem happy that straws aren't being used. At one restaurant they even asked our table if we wanted straws or not.
