Dorna Schroeter 7/31/2019 6:18 AMOne option during this intermediate period as we transition away from oil-based plastic bottles is to purchase the product as a concentrate when possible. I have a terrible problem with deer so I purchase a one-gallon deer repellent. Yesterday, I discovered it comes in a 16 bottle of concentrate. So I bought that, poured it into the one-gallon I purchased last year and added water. Not only is it a smaller bottle, using less plastic, but I saved $3! -

Dorna Schroeter 7/25/2019 6:05 AMTapped reminded me about the social justice issues around the making of plastic bottles. Most PET bottles are made in Corpus Cristi Texas. The people that live there suffer terrible health problems related to the toxic wastes being produced by the plant. Time for a change of attitude toward all plastic bottles/packaging. New attitudes form new behaviors!! -
Dorna Schroeter 7/24/2019 1:30 PMGoing to see the documentary Tapped tonight at Upstate!! It is a free screening co-presented by Upstate and Sun Common! -
Dorna Schroeter 7/22/2019 11:35 AMDebi Duke asked me to share the homemade toothpaste recipe I modified and used.
- About 1/2 cup coconut oil (I used cream)
- 2 Tablespoons of baking soda
- 2 small packets of stevia powder (I didn't use this)
- 15-20 drops of peppermint or cinnamon essential oil (I hate mint, so I used fennel)
- 10 drops myrrh extract (optional) (next time, I will try this.
Natural Toothpaste Instructions
Melt or slightly soften coconut oil.
Mix in other ingredients and stir well. If using semi-hard coconut oil, use a fork, if not, use a spoon. If you are using completely melted coconut oil, you will need to stir several times while the mixture cools to keep the baking soda incorporated.
Put mixture into small glass jar (I make different ones for each family member)
Let cool completely.
To use: dip toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles. Could also use a small spoon to put on toothbrush.

Dorna Schroeter 7/24/2019 7:19 AMWe will see! I am currently using it interspersed with the toothpowder I use as I have a full bottle of it. I am going to look at dry powder recipes as well. Even before this, in the mornings (when we remember!) we have been putting a 1/2 tsp of coconut oil in our mouth and rub it into our gums! -
Leola Specht 7/23/2019 9:28 AMI'd be interested in learning how you and your family like it over time -- I bought homemade toothpaste at a Farmers Market in Puerto Rico (it's baking soda, peppermint and coconut oil). I find it works more easily in Summer when the coconut oil is sort. In Winter I had to use a little spoon to put it on my toothbrush.
