Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

Finally have my act together with correct bags and containers. I’m finding that the bulk container offerings at Sunseed are comparable to the packaged items. Have my pantry set up with labeled Mason Jars. Sunseed is less convenient than Publix next door, but can easily plan a trip just a mile down the road. ‘Mindful Consuming’

    Food Use Reusable Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

I must not forget my reusable bag when I dash into the drugstore and getting through errands. The ‘oops’ add up over the year.  Guess this goes into the realm of ‘mindful shopping and consuming.

“The problem is that over the last 60 years, every aspect of our lives has changed because of disposables. We live in a totally linear world where trees and bauxite and petroleum are turned into the paper and aluminum and plastics that are part of everything we touch. It has created this Convenience Industrial Complex. It's structural. It's cultural. Changing it is going to be far more difficult, because it permeates every aspect of the economy.”

    A good Treehugger article,

Dang Barbara, I thought YOU said that...

It is the biggest challenge. And disposables became so ingrained in our culture that people just do it, they don't give a second thought about grabbing that plastic bag or bottle. BUT, we have to start somewhere and I think we have enough people now bringing problems caused by disposables to the forefront to make others think about it and want to change. Even businesses are looking into alternatives. That's huge!

Posted on Facebook this morning by a person new to eating Whole Food Plant Based. The plastic really negates the  good in changing your diet. It is hard to see the whole picture when focusing on a specific goal.

OMG! Every single item is wrapped in plastic... but that's the default, isn't it? Unless you go out of your way, you get plastic. Plastic is just standard - unfortunately.

    Food Make Your Own
How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

Today is the weekday that my husband and I make Lefse. It is a Norwegian potato flatbread. We have been experimenting with the recipe to eliminate oil with organic ingredients and plant based milk instead of cream. Then, make enough to get through the week of lunches. Finally nailed it.  Today, we double the recipe to take a batch to Wayne’s mom who is one month from turning 101!

Barbara, Wayne's mom must have so many stories to tell you.  How wonderful that she's still here.  I'm sure you've both learned an awful lot from here over the years.  Thanks for sharing that.

Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

Over the last year, I have eliminated the use of  plastic storage containers. I still have plastic lids for many glass containers. But try to make sure that food does not contact the lids during storage. I have worked at being cognizant of the mental checklist before purchasing items, looking for alternatives to plastic wrappings and single use items. The more one works towards a plastic free environment, the more overwhelming it becomes due to heightened awareness of the issue!
