Reduce!

I will research the best/most sustainable products when absolutely needing a replacement, but before going and buying something new, I will make sure it's really needed. Example: The amount of resources that go into making a reusable bag are greater than a single use plastic bag. Buying extra reusable bags that I won't use regularly just contribute to the problem. I will try not to buy new bags, and will instead reuse bags that may not get a lot of use (ex: my beach tote is now being used for grocery duty). I will invest in high quality bags that last a long time if buying them and will try to repair any bags that rip before throwing them out.

Ugh! New goal for the end of July is to remember to check in for all the remaining days. If you see me around feel free to help remind me!

So happy to see everyone's actions adding up!  What do you have left to do? Any other one-time challenges you need to tackle?

I need to remember to track down my supervisors at work and see what we can do to order biodegradable utensils/cups as back-ups for our keeper area.

Was so excited to get to share more about this challenge on the Morning Blend yesterday! Cypress the alligator is a great ambassador to help people think about where their plastic waste ends up and how we can do better to keep our local waterways clean.

Alright, I'm making a goal to write Subway to ask them to reduce their plastic bag use this weekend!! If you see me Tuesday make sure to ask me about it and hold me accountable. :)

Yes! Some Subways already use paper bags instead of plastic, so it’s totally possible.

The biggest thing for me when I tackled this challenge today was snacks! I love snacks and soda on a long car ride. Plus, usually an excuse to stop and wander the gas station is welcomed after a couple hours in the car. Today though, I planned ahead and brought chips we still have from the last party in a Tupperware and some pickles!  Plus two reusable water bottles with some mio added in.  I definitely was way healthier than I would have been with fat and salt filled junk food from the gas station and saved money in addition to reducing my waste.  I love how every time I complete a challenge to reduce plastic waste, I also better my overall well-being! I think that may be the best thing I learned from this challenge.  If encountering someone who is ambivalent towards reducing plastic waste for the environment, letting them know the health and cost saving benefits can cause just as much needed change.

On Wednesdays a group of keepers usually all trek to Subway to get lunch together.  Subway gives out plastic bags for each order and it bugs me to no end. I always ask to not get a bag, but this week I convinced a couple co-workers to go bag-less with me too! We are going to stash small reusable bags in our lockers to make sure we have a bag to help bring our lunches back from now on.  I also think subway's decision to give out bags for each order (even eat-in) is incredibly wasteful and decided I need to write their corporate office. Hoping to hear back!

Conquered a personal challenge today and asked a bagger to take away a plastic bag. I bought produce and purposely didn't get a plastic bag, but they put one over it to go into my reusable when bagging (wut.)  I nicely asked her to remove it and had a quick conversation about why I thought it was unnecessary. Definitely not as big of a deal as I made it out to be in my head and hopefully now she'll ask before giving out more.

Confession and brainstorming time!  As we celebrated the 4th, I definitely had some cringe-factor about how much plastic waste we generated.   Between disposable silverware, plastic packaging for food/drinks and extra trash bags I would love to brainstorm about how to do better for next time.  Doing this challenge definitely made me re-think lots of stuff and we did reduce our overall plastic waste from last year.  I'm gonna take the win and plan to do more next time!  Anyone have suggestions?

Some things I would like to do differently for next party:
Find biodegradable silverware I can have on hand for easy use.  I was debating getting a 'party set' of silverware like we do cups, but just don't think it would be great long term.  I can also bring the biodegradable stuff into the zoo to compost after.

-Plan ahead to recycle cans and reduce plastic bottle use.  I went for mostly can drinks for this party, but had margarita mix I bought that could have been made with less plastic use (and fresher!).  I also think if I get all the cans together we could make a bit of money that could be donated back to an organization to try to compensate for our increased waste.

-Encourage guests to think about plastic use.  Something I meant to do before the party, was to send out a post reminding people to reduce their plastic.  We had a lot of people bringing items in plastic bags or using non-reusable water bottles.  For my next party, I want to send out a message reminding people to bring a reusable water bottle and use their reusable bags. To help make it fun, I want to do a 'crazy cup' party where people bring a fun cup of their own to make people think a bit about their disposable use.

-Have trash containers without bags.  It would have been really easy to just not put bags in our trash containers for the party.  It requires a bit more effort and clean-up, but would have been an easy way to reduce a lot of plastic waste.

Some positive things I did differently from last year:
-Reused all our decorations.  We are going on 3 years with the same decorations so I was really tempted to get some new stuff.  Especially since these things are only used one month out of the year, I want to get as much use of them as possible.  Plus, a lot of the items have plastic packaging as well as are made of plastic.  I'm gonna look for some sales with natural fiber decorations to put aside for next year and make sure to take care of our current decorations to make them last longer.

-Reusable cups!  After the 4th last year we stocked up on washable cups.  We had enough for the majority of our guests this year and I only saw a couple solo cups being used.  I tried to snag those before they went in the garbage to wash and re-use.  We also didn't give out straws, but I did have a couple paper ones I got to have on hand in case people did want one.

-Kept packaging to put uneaten food back in and used re-usable containers for leftovers.  I usually will dump chips into bowls and toss the bags and just put things back into ziplocks to keep things fresher.  This year, I made sure to save all the bags and put the leftovers back into their original containers with clips for storage.  For things like our potato salad and watermelon, we used tupperware.

I've been picking up trash as I walk my neighborhood with my dog.  My usual route didn't have 5 pieces to pick up today so I had to venture further out!  Making a difference!

Went out to eat tonight and since I hadn't brought a to-go container with me, split a dinner so I wouldn't have too much food that I would feel I needed to take home.  I think this challenge is going to help me lose weight along with reducing plastic.  I'm realizing how much 'extra' I can reduce when I really think about what the end results are.
