Like the Toronto Zoo I love using paper straws. I don't usually use straws. I don't have any in my house. They are unnecessary and so bad. I think all public areas that serve drink and straws should completely abandon plastic and use only paper.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

I do have plastic utensils, which are great for parties. However, the kind I buy are reusable. You can wash them and re-use them many, many times. In the community, plastic is used far too frequently. I honestly don't know how this can be changed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

The one thing I must say is when buying meat at a regular grocery store, you can't seem to get away from the plastic wrapping and the styrofoam bottom. It really bugs me As for single-use plastics, I do not use them in  my home such as straws.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

We regularly use reusable containers. We do not eat out alot, which helps. For Tim's coffee, we have our own travel mugs. It's the little things that build into better.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

I am more mindful of the packaging of food products. I try to buy products with the least amount of plastic. For veg and fruit, I don't use the plastic bags. In fact, I use cloth re-usable bags for shopping.

This drives me CRAZY. There is simply no need for them. I think that would be a good first step for a lot of stores-get rid of the bags!

We are big recyclers in this house. it does help we live out in the country and are more aware of the effect plastic waste as on the environment, land, air and sea.
